This is a quality list of links on Southern heritage and Civil War topics. I have personally reviewed each of these sites to insure that they adhere to the standards of quality and content that I demand. To submit your site for listing on this page, e-mail me with your site's name, URL and a brief description of its content. Annual National Confederate Memorial Service - An annual event held on the second Saturday in April at Stone Mountain Memorial Park in Georgia. This event is open to participation by all pro-Confederate groups. See the website for specific details. AmericanCivilWar.com - A Civil War site with lots of links on people, places, battles and events of the war. American Civil War Homepage, The - An extensive resource of links and information on rosters, biographies, reenacting, battles, campaigns and too many other subject areas to list here. This vast wealth of information is updated on a regular basis. Annual Gettysburg Reenactment - Want to get the scoop about plans for the next Gettysburg reenactment? This site is the official source for that information. While visiting their site, you expecially want to watch for details concerning the 140th Anniversary Reenactment, scheduled for 2003. It's destined to be a big one. Arlington House - The Robert E. Lee Memorial - Overlooking Washington, D.C. and the Potomac River, the Arlington House is preserved as a memorial to Robert E. Lee, who spent 30 years of his life there. Aw, Shucks! Southern News & Links - Excellent page of news links on Southern heritage issues updated on a regular basis. Camp Chase Gazette - The voice of Civil War reenacting, it is published monthly except December and February. I can't say enough about this magazine which is all done in black and white, its style reminiscent of 1800s type publications. Civil War Books - Two books by Julian "Jinx' Olson, Hunter Jones Joins the Civil War and Soul Mates Left Behind. Both look like they might be good reads. Civil War Generals, Soldiers and Others - An About.com links page to many Civil War leaders and soldiers. Good source of information for the Civil War researcher. Civil War Interactive: The Daily Newspaper of the Civil War - Can't say enought for this site. In addition to daily news items about Civil War heritage-related events, they have such features as: Trivia Challange, a monthly contest where you can win prizes; This Day In The Civil War, find out what happened on this date in the war; A Civil War cookbook with over 600 entries that are updated daily; Archives, Civil War on TV, links, weather, calendar of events and much, much more. Confederate Infantry Private, The - This site is dedicated to the thousands of young Southern men who bravely went off to war to defend thier homeland. It is an effort to educate the public about the real Confederate soldier, his life, and his experiences. Confederate States Air Force, The - "Welcome to The Confederate States Air Force. Declaration of Causes of Seceding States - This page presents the causes of secession as declared in official documents of the states of Georgia, Mississippi, South Carolina and Texas. It is an excellent and detailed reference for anyone who is researching the true causes of the secession of the Southern states. Dixie Daily News, The - Southern Political News, Commentary, Heritage Events & Guest Editorials about the Emerging South. This is a terrific site for Southerners who want to stay informed about events affecting our Southern heritage. FirearmsTalk.com - Firearms, Guns & Weapons community discussion forums. Friends of the National Parks at Gettysburg - FNPG was recently voted the group who has done the most for battlefield preservation by the Gettysburg Discussion Group. Gettysburg National Military Park - This is the National Park Service's official website for Gettysburg National Military Park. It has all the information you need to know for planning your visit to this crucial Civil War battlefield. Hispanic Confederates - Although it is not generally acknowledged, a number of soldiers of Hispanic ancestry fought on behalf of the Confederacy during the American Civil War. This Third Edition book, by author John O'Donnell-Rosales, lists more than 6,150 officers and enlisted soldiers (including Medical Doctors, Women and Hispanics holding political office under the Confederacy ). This is one of the foremost organizations for the preservation of Souhthern heritage. Be sure to bookmark this one. Mariners' Museum, The - This is one of the nation's largest and finest maritime history museums. North-South Skirmish Association, The - North-South Skirmish Association, The (N-SSA) was formed in 1950 to commemorate the heroism of the men, of both sides, who fought in the American Civil War, 1861-1865. The N-SSA promotes the shooting of Civil War firearms and artillery and encourages the preservation and display of Civil War materials. My Southron Heritage - "I have a dream that one day we will all walk hand-in-hand as AMERICANS and the culture of all AMERICANS will be remembered and celebrated. To this day the yankees still try to condemn the south for slavery when those same northern states allowed slavery until the north went through an industrial revolution...." This is an excellent site by a web writer who has studied her subject well. Port Columbus Civil War Naval Museum - Port Columbus National Civil War Naval Museum, the nation's most innovative new museum, gives visitors a chance to discover the most pivotal perid of naval history. Pre-War and Secession - An About.com page of links to sites concerning events before the Civil War that helped to influence the conflict, as well as the Southern Secession crisis. Rich Mountain Battlefield Foundation - In one of the earliest engagements of the Civil War, Union regiments under the command of General George B. McClellan attacked and defeated Confederate troops defending a strategic mountain pass on the Staunton-Parkersburg Turnpike. Sam Hood's Civil War Site - This site contains plenty of Civil War facts and info, including facts of the week, Civil War quotes, and a section including biographies on the war's major figures. Secession Convention of 1861 - "For many southerners, the election of Abraham Lincoln in the fall of 1860 was equivalent to a declaration of war on the South. A few, including Texas' aging Governor Sam Houston, argued against secession. They proclaimed the benefits of mediation and compromise. Further, if Texas did separate from the Union, Houston reasoned, she would fare better as an independent republic than as a member of the Confederacy." SOUTHERN LATITUDES: The Homepages of a Dixie Cowboy - A good ole boy with Western leanings expounds upon his Southern philosophy and lifestyle, with a little humor tossed in for good measure. Southern Messenger.org - There are lots of good postings of articles and letters by different authors on Southern heritage at this site, as well as some very good links to other sites. A link at the top of their main page allows you to register your Confederate veteran online. Southern Party of Georgia, The - "A grass roots effort to restore Good Government for the People of Georgia" Stonewall - A living history presentation featuring Stephen Cassle as Stonewall Jackson with features on Jackson's Mill, living history images, and event listings. This is a beautiful site. Thomas Jonathan Jackson (1824-1863) - "Next to Robert E. Lee himself, Thomas J. Jackson is the most revered of all Confederate commanders. A graduate of West Point (1846), he had served in the artillery in the Mexican War, earning two brevets, before resigning to accept a professorship at the Virginia Military Institute. Thought strange by the cadets, he earned "Tom Fool Jackson" and "Old Blue Light" as nicknames." Top Ten Reasons Why Yankees Should Not Move to Florida - This page is absolutely MUST reading for any Yankee considering a move to the Sunshine State. You may get a few laughs from reading some of the reasons. But take it from someone who was born there, these reasons are not based on myths.
